The Beautiful Beaches of Central Algarve

Central Algarve Beaches, although the busiest during the summer, still have plenty of room for everyone! From small coves to sandy beaches stretching as far as the eye can see. The beaches are marked on the map by a number.

Praia do Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro was a traditional, small fishing village surviving on the tuna catches but has, not surprisingly, become an incredibly popular resort with visitors and has developed to keep pace.

The town beach, Praia do Carvoeiro is a beautifully sheltered sandy bay and spreads out just in front of the square with cliffs protecting it on either side. There are bars and cafés ideally placed around the square to still enjoy the view when you leave the beach!

Getting there
Take the highway or the RN 125 road  to Carvoeiro, there are just two roads leading down into the town where they meet in a small square behind the beach, follow the sign “Centro” in Carvoeiro.

Praia da Albandeira

Amazingly, this jewel of a beach is completely off the tourist radar. Tiny, with white sands pinched between ochre rocks, it has no watersports, no umbrellas, no sunbeds and few visitors. Take a good book and soak up the sun or laze in the shadow of the cliffs behind you.

Praia da Senhora da Rocha is a small fishing community and beach the civil parish of Porches, near Lagoa.
The beach is one of the most rustic ones along the coast and was used as a refuge for small fishing boats in the area.
The beach is flanked by cliffs. At the west end is a promontory on which is the old Fort and Shrine of Nossa Senhora da Rocha. A tunnel has been excavated through this promontory to link Praia da Senhora da Rocha with Praia Nova on the other side.

Praia Armação de Pêra

blueflag_iconThe town sits in a long bay between Carvoeiro and Albufeira in central Algarve. It began as a small settlement of fishermen’s huts used by the inhabitants of the nearby village of Pêra.

Running the length in front of the town lies a long stretch of golden sandy beach between Ponte da Galé and Senhora da Rocha including a backdrop of lime and sandstone cliffs, caves and coves to explore along the coast. There are boat trips available that will take in the sights of this golden coastline including the caves hidden along the shore.
The crystal clarity and calm waters in these parts of the Algarve makes it ideal for snorkelling and very safe for families to enjoy.

Getting there
Follow the signs Pêra from Porches (N125). Follow the sign “Centro”. There is enough place to park.

Praia dos Pescadores, Albufeira

Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman’s beach) is situated right in front of Albufeira’s old town. It is one of the resort’s main beaches along with neighbouring Praia do Túnel and as such can get pretty busy in the summer months. Of course there are advantages; it is easily accessible from the Old Town – there is even an escalator down to beach level from the cliffs behind.

There are still a few colourful fishing boats dotted around the beach but it is now the haven of sun seekers. One nod to the town’s fishing heritage is the number of seafood restaurants along the beach front, along with most other things you’d need for a family day at the beach.

Getting there

Take the highway or the RN 125 road  to Albufeira, on the last rondabout turn left and follow the signs “Centro” or “Praia Pescadores”.

Centrally located, near to Vilamoura and the golden Triangle.  There are several access points at either end of the cliffs. This is perfect to watch the colours of the sky deepen in the sunset.

It is a popular spot for families and resort visitors in the summer. The sand banks have a gentle slope to the water and there are plenty of beach restaurants, facilities and lifeguards during the busier summer season.

Praia da Quarteira

blueflag_iconQuarteira Beach is beautiful and rock-free and there are plenty of eating places with the Avenida Infante de Sagres running along behind it, which you can call on for refreshments. Quarteira still boasts a local fishing community and the fishermen can be seen at work at the western end of the beach. The catches are sold at the nearby fish market early in the morning and will end up on your plate for lunch or dinner the same day.

Quarteira offers a huge range of culinary delights, with the emphasis, of course, on the beautifully fresh fish and shellfish dishes such as grilled sardines, “cataplanas”, “caldeirada” (a kind of fish stew) and prawns, to name but a few.

Getting there
Follow the N125 road in the direction of Boliqueime or Pereiras, follow the signs “Vilamoura” or “Quarteira”, there is plenty parking place on the Boulevard.

Praia do Ancão

blueflag_iconFavoured by many national and international personalities, this beach is located near the luxury complex of Vale do Lobo.
Surrounded by dunes, it is considered one of the best beaches in the Algarve as it is sheltered from the crowds that usually invade the region. For those seeking a quiet spot with a clean, wide sandy beach, this is one of the best options.

Lying within the large protected area making up the Ria Formosa Natural Park that extends through to Tavira, Ancão Beach covers a large expanse of sand flanked by dunes and pine trees.
Praia doAncão has excellent support infrastructures including top class restaurants and bars in addition to services such as nautical sport equipment hire or facilities for aerobics and football.

Ilha de Faro

“Praia de Faro” (Faro Beach) is the only one that has a roadway connection, the others are reached by ferry boats. The boat trip itself is fun and the ilhas are idyllic.
