The Beautiful Beaches of Western Algarve

Western Algarve Beaches are some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve and since the extension of the A22 motorway, more and more people have been discovering the delights of the western Algarve.

Praia do Monte Clérigo

blueflag_iconThe beach of Praia do Monte Clérigo is a blue flag and natural beach located near the town of Aljezur, inside the Vicentine Coast Natural Park (Costa Vicentina). This is an area of outstanding natural beauty as yet unspoilt by mass tourism.
With good access points from the road and car park to the rear of the main beach area. There is a timber ramp and stairways down to the sand.
A fine gold sand and very clean beach, when the sea conditions are right, is a popular spot for surfing and bodyboarding, and in the season there is a surf school.

Getting there
From the town of Lagos take the RN 120 road north towards Aljezur/Sines, Just before the village of Aljezur turn left, signposted to Vale da Telha, Arrifana and a brown sign posted to Praia do monte Clérigo. At the top of the hill turn right and follow the road round to the Praia do Monte Clérigo.

Praia da Arrifana

blueflag_iconPraia da Arrifana beach belongs to Arrifana, a small fishing village in the Algarve region that is also a popular holiday destination with the locals and tourists alike. Located on the waterfront are many seafood restaurants and cafes that are perfect to quench thirst and fill stomachs after a busy but exciting day of activities at the beach. Dishes made from fresh seafood procured from the village’s little fishing harbor are delish and in much demand.

Getting there
From the town of Lagos take the RN 120 road north towards Sines, Just before the village of Aljezur turn left, signposted to Vale da Telha, Praia do monte Clérigo and a brown sign posted to Praia da Arrifana. At the top of the hill turn left and follow the road round to the Praia da Arrifana.

Praia do Beliche

Praia do Beliche is ideally suited for the adventurous but because of the shelter the cliffs provide it is equally suited for visitors who simply want to enjoy the sun. Praia do Beliche is close enough to Sagres that it is easily accessible but far enough away so that it never feels totally crowded.  There is a long stairway down to the beach.
Praia do Beliche is an ideal beach suitable for sun worshippers and experienced surfers alike, one the best beach of the region.

Getting there
From the town of Lagos take the RN 125 road west to Vila do Bispo/Sagres. In Vila do Bispo take the RN268 to Sagres, at the roundabout in the village of Sagres turn right, signposted to Praia do Beliche.

Praia do Martinhal

blueflag_iconPraia do Martinhal Beach is located at the eastern part of the town of Sagres in Algarve. It is flat, sandy, and huge an its location makes it well protected from the westerly winds.
The beach has a blue flag, a testament to the high standard of cleanliness and safety and security in the area, where you can also find several lifeguards, which you can approach for assistance.

Getting there
From the town of Lagos take the RN 125 road west to Vila do Bispo/Sagres. In Vila do Bispo take the RN268 to Sagres, just before the village of Sagres turn left, signposted to Martinhal Praia.

Praia da Luz

blueflag_iconPraia da Luz is located near the town of Lagos, has seen much development in recent years and it has become a firm favourite for the English patriot community.
Between the two landmarks is Luz’s lovely, long sandy beach which is overlooked by the town itself. An exceptional patterned cobbled promenade ( Avenida dos Pescadores ) runs from just below the pretty Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz ( Our Lady of the Light ) along the whole of the seafront to the cluster of beach bars. The promenade is normally busy with many craft stalls during high season and there are also several cafe / bars, restaurants and gift shops.

Getting there
From the town of Lagos take the RN 125 road west to Vila do Bispo/Sagres. Just after Espiche turn left to Praia da Luz, signposted to Luz, Praia da Luz.

Praia da Dona Ana

blueflag_iconPraia da Dona Ana beach, is regarded as the most picturesque beach of the Algarve region. The small cove is bound by steep colourful strata cliffs while the golden sands are lapped by the crystal clear waters – Simply put the Praia da Dona Ana is stunning. Dona Ana beach is within walking distance of central Lagos and makes for an ideal location for a day relaxing.

Getting there
Take the highway or the RN 125 road  to Lagos, on the last roundabout before the centre of Lagos turn right, signposted to Praias, follow the road and turn left to Praia Dona Ana.

Praia do Pinhão

Praia do Pinhão is a beatiful beach just minutes away from the centre of Lagos.
Its tall orange cliffs create a secluded cove, untouched in terms of commericalism, there are no shops, umbrellas or deck chairs. So if you go early its a truly peaceful place to get in touch with nature, take a swim and watch the glistening ocean.
Acces by a magnificent old stairway, looking down to the turquoise ocean.

Getting there
Take the highway or the RN 125 road  to Lagos, on the last roundabout before the center of Lagos go strait away and the turn right into a small road and just park the car on the side of the road. You also can park the car at the car parking and walk to the beach.

Praia dos Três Irmãos

There are two lovely beaches in Alvor, “Praia de Alvor” and “Praia dos Três Irmãos”. In fact, it is really just one long stretch of golden sand, but the western end is called Praia de Alvor and the eastern end is called Praia dos Três Irmãos. At the back of the long open sandy beach, there are rolling sand dunes that back on to the lagoon formed by the Alvor river. This is a great area for things to do in Alvor, as the lagoon is ideal for water sports, such as kitesurfing, and the network of walkways over the dunes are perfect for cycling and nature observing.

Getting there
Take the highway or the RN 125 road  to Portimão, follow the sign “praias” in Portimão, on the last roundabout near Praia da Rocha, go left and take the M531 to Alvor, on the next roundabout go left signposted “Prainha”.

Praia do Vau

blueflag_iconThis popular beach can be found between Alvor and Praia da Rocha in a horseshoe bay. When it is low tide you can walk around the rocks to Praia da Rocha, along several coves beaches. To the west of Praia do Vau is Praia do Alemão – a beautiful stretch of beach that leads towards the coves and rock formations at Prainha.
The yellow clay (argila) that is found in this area is said to be good for arthitis and a whole range of skin conditions, so it is quite usual to see people with various parts of their bodies covered in yellow mud!

Take the highway or the RN 125 road  to Portimão, follow the sign “praias” in Portimão, on the last roundabout near Praia da Rocha, go left and take the M531 to Alvor, on the next roundabout go left signposted “Prainha”.

Praia da Rocha

blueflag_iconPraia da Rocha is a lively resort that caters equally well for families and night owls. Located at the estuary of the River Arade, right next to Portimão, Rocha (as it is known) has undergone some great make-overs in the recent past and is now on the “must visit” list of international jet-setters.
At night Praia da Rocha offers A-list beach parties, bars with live music, karaoke bars and beach-side lounge bars. There are several clubs that party into the early hours of the next day.

Take the highway or the RN 125 road  to Portimão, follow the sign “praias” in Portimão, at the last roundabout you will find Praia da Rocha.
